The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICA) of the University of Trento has been created in January 1990 from the former, Department of Engineering (active since 1985), together with two other departments: Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Engineering.
Since the beginning, the main components of DICA have been referred to the traditional branches of Hydraulics, Architecture, Topography and Urban Planning. Afterwards, having gained the Department new competences in the branches of Forestry, Calculus, Sanitary Engineering, Atmospheric Physics and Technical Physics in collaboration with other national and international relevant research centres, DICA has promoted and coordinated researches concerning investigation, representation and innovative planning techniques in the broad topics of protection of the environment and of the land. Thus the two different faces of Civil and Environmental engineering, the first featuring mainly planning activities and the second the methodological ones, have found a fertile soil and a useful interaction.
During the years, the composition of DICA has been varying in the number of its members and in the subjects represented. These changes reflect the evolution due to the willingness to improve the teaching offer and represent the direct result of research development and growing of the internal resources. Furthermore, due to the introduction of the reform of the University system, the whole teaching activity has undergone new articulations and reconfigurations.
