| The group is active since the foundation of the Department
and undertakes research in several areas of Solid and Structural Mechanics, both theoretically and
numerically. The results obtained in the fields of Pre-stressed Solid Mechanics, Composite Materials
Mechanics, Mechanics of Elastic and Elastic-Plastic Materials, Fracture Mechanics find application
in the design of new high-performance materials, smart/micro-structures and allow to understand the
response of complex materials such as fluid saturated geomaterials. Research in Brain Biomechanics
is currently in progress with the aim to formulate a constitutive description able to predict
injury-induced damage. Part of the activity is carried out within the
Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics Lab.
where new numerical techniques for Boundary and Finite Element Methods are developed.
The Laboratory for physical modeling of structures
and photoelasticity, with physical models, computer
graphics and photoelastic equipments, supports student learning. The group has contacts and co-operates
with a number of foreign research institutions and hosted several Senior Visiting Professors in the
last few years. |
